Finding Peace in Our Differences

ferguson love peace st louis

As you may or may not know, Three Avocados is based just outside of St. Louis, MO. And unless you’ve been living completely oblivious to the news, you’ve probably heard about what recently happened in Ferguson, MO, also a St. Louis suburb. On August 9th, Mike Brown was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson. In the following weeks, there have been peaceful protests, riots, looting, and plenty of racist remarks flowing from both sides of the debate.

As our city wrestles with finding truth, justice, and peace, I’m reminded of a sermon I once heard that focused on Genesis 1:27.

God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

I think this verse is extremely applicable in this situation and brings extreme wisdom. Every single one of us was created in the image of God. This means that God created us with an undeniable, inherent equality. It means that none of us are more important than any other. Regardless of color, gender, religion, sexual preference, nationality, age, social status, or anything else.

I think that every one of us makes some level of judgements based on how others look, act, speak, etc. We are often fearful of those that aren’t quite like us. However, Genesis 1:27 reminds us that in God’s eyes we are all the same – we are all equal.
